Waiting for the Feeling of Independence

Some things are possible even with a muscle disease. When I turned 16 years old, I remember all my friends getting their driver’s license. I remember the void of something that I should be able to complete. But life continued, and when I was 22 years old, I decided the wait was over. I had seen a PT and OT, and they approved me because they said I have the strength to drive with the right adapted equipment. So I took the next step and went to the Rehabilitation Center at Ohio State University. I took a driving class and drove their equipped van. I received my driver’s license.

Notes on Notetaking

For many students and workers with muscular dystrophy, including myself, notetaking is difficult due to weakened hands and arms. One solution is to have a peer notetaker. This is an accommodation that many schools and colleges offer. However, there may be situations at work or school where you are unable to rely on a notetaker. You may even wish to take notes yourself! Thanks to some pretty cool technologies, people now have the ability to take their own notes. My personal favorite notetaking device is the Livescribe pen.
