About Transitioning

Welcome to MDA’s new Transitions Resource Center, a site focused on the needs, goals and hopes of young people with neuromuscular disease!

Each year in the United States, nearly half a million youth with disabilities and chronic health conditions cross into adulthood — and the numbers continue to grow. However, barriers continue to exist for young people seeking higher education, employment and independent living.

Nevertheless, there are many success stories in the neuromuscular community of individuals who have faced these societal challenges head-on (click here to meet some of these people). MDA’s new transitional services program is aimed at working with youth and families to identify the multifaceted needs of our young adult community, and then identifying the necessary supports and services needed to navigate the existing systemic barriers.

MDA also is working to change “the system,” and through our national advocacy program, we are working to create a social and political environment that supports independent living, and encourages young people to pursue their hopes and dreams for the future.

Join us in creating a more inclusive world for young people with neuromuscular disease. This is your opportunity to GET INVOLVED by telling us about the issues you consider most important and sharing resources that you consider helpful. Together, our voices are strong. Together, we are breaking barriers and building successful futures.
